Intelligent seam placement is also computationally expensive.
Not necessarily, as photoshop autoblend shows. It is the fastest blender
with the best result regarding seam placement in Hans Nyberg's test:
http://www.panoramas.dk/panorama/CS3-autoblending.html
And Helmut Dersch implemented an experimental seam optimization in his
PTStitcherNG, which is very fast but might fail miserably due to the
streaming manner it works: "early wrong decisions of the seam optimizer
can not be corrected later and may result in disasters." (Taken from
http://webuser.hs-furtwangen.de/~dersch/PTStitcherNG/Changes.txt )
However, even if seam optimization takes longer it is inevitable for
some kinds of panoramas (f.e. crowds or windy leaves). Even slight
misalignments in structured ground (which otherwise result in the well
known "smearing") benefit from seam optimization.
