I asked Mr. Gotschy for replacement strings specifically for extensive
use outdoors and this is the one he recommended, but of course I could
send him a mail about it. I also shimmed up the string to reduce the
amount of energy / pressure onto the wheel, but with little effect on
the noise. You are probably right in that the easiest solution is to
replace the string - I don't want to ruin the set up. I got a tip from
another Phoenix player about using a high tension Thomastik Spirocore
Viola string, wolfram spun. Maybe I'll try that.
