Hi Marty
When we came over to OTW last year (and the year before) we brought our
instruments as carry-on. There were five of us travelling on the same
flight (Chris, Mike, Graham, Tobie and myself), so safety in numbers ;-)
We all have soft cases for our gurdies, which means that they don't take
up any more space than the need to. It's a bit scary watching people
cram stuff into the overhead bins, but you just have to make sure that
nobody tried to put anything heavy in with the instrument. If you see
someone heading towards the bin in which your precious instrument is
safely stowed, be prepared to leap up from your seat to stop them trying
to squeeze anything more into the bin. I can growl quite fiercely if
need be!
I had much worse experiences flying to and from Ireland the year before
last. Ryanair are very difficult to deal with. Their website was very
unclear about how to book a seat for an instrument (which is what you
have to do because a gurdy case is bigger than the maximum hand-baggage
size). I had a stand-up row with someone at the airport as I believed
that I'd bought a seat for the gurdy, but in fact I'd paid (double the
cost of my ticket) for it to go in the hold. In the end, I managed to
persuade them to allow me to bring the gurdy on as hand baggage, and my
small case went in the hold.
Hope that helps.

Ruthie,
Well, it looks like we're about to have a new addition to our family.
My wife is presently in France, and her sister's husband has lent her
the HG he'd bought for his sons, which they have not the slightest
interest in. She's planning to try to bring it home this next week,
hence the question. How did you bring yours to OTW last year? As
checked baggage, or carry-on? Was there any sort of problem with
doing that? She'll be flying Air France and invariably brings back a
whacking great haul of flea-market swag for her antiques/collectibles
business, but it always flies as checked baggage and she really
doesn't much care what happens to it. This is different ...
