Well, I was off by a day on her flight date. She just called from the airport in San Francisco, had no trouble with Air France, and the vielle made the trip on the seat next to her. I can't imagine her actually buying a seat for it, so she must have been permitted to take it on as carry-on. All of this suggests to me that it was a fairly empty flight, and, as Felicia suggested, the stars and planets were in a favorable alignment. I also found out that she'd been able to reach both Penny Cloud and Richard Taylor by phone while I was playing my (viol) gig, so she did have some idea of what to expect. Thanks to everyone who responded, and I hope the next person suddenly presented with the prospect of an international flight with a vielle will profit from the excellent information in this discussion.
