Much of what you say here is true, improvements can always be made to any
piece of gear. The RM was definately marketed to a *cheaper* market to
provide a box with more bang for buck than its rivals, and certainly has
done well in this regard. Unfortunately, we are in a commercial world in
which the bigger MI companies have long term strategies which involved
bringing out equipment on a "..gradually upgraded.." scale. This is
something we have to live with . The RM3X would have been great straight
up, and makes great sense to us end users, but not much sense to
(non-musical) CEO's, who want forecasts and figures and like stringing out
customers by making sure they ALWAYS buy newer gear every couple of years
!!!!!! Corporate longevity - Arcchh... Gotta love em all for at least
building the stuff though !!! In classic Yamaha style, a newer RM can be
expected on the shelves in 18 months to 2 years. The intensity of your
quarms about the RM's limitations are shared by others, and thats a good
thing. Fact is you (us/we) need to use samplers and other tools (DAW's,
synths, sound sources, plugins etc) in conjunction with RM (with all its
pros and cons) to really make Pro releaseable music that compares and
competes very well with top underground/mainstream acts and the vinyl
played by DJ's. I saw one guy at an underground rave play the most
incredible music and it was all from an MC303 !! Never heard anyone ever
pull out what he did from that box, and I dont really like the MC303 all
that much. I guess my point here is do what we can with what we have !!!
(..A La Beatles on the 4 track..) My live electronic set is all done in
Pattern mode bar 2 trax - I dont do unrehearsed freeform techno and thats
where in some respects the RM on its own can have its holes in a live set -
Pattern chain can be cool, but still limiting if you wann go somewhere else
with your set at will. The RM truly excells for tunes which are pre-written
and arranged to some degree - especially when synced up to an MPC2000 with
a DJ mixer in the middle - as you can swap between them, change of
flavour, sounds, etc.
So the RM has a few quirks and things which could be definately be
improved. If YAMAHA take this list seriously in any way and see the wish
list and a condensed version of what we all think of their product, we all
stand to benefit down the line. Theres been some fantastic info on the RM
on this list and it seems many people get lots out of it, and it seems a
little stronger than other lists around, and that too is a really good
thing !!!
Cheers...
