Gotta jump in here. I think Rexx is going in the right direction here. It
is easy to point out some flaws on the machine but we have to put them in the
right context. Although Rexx has pointed out some of the reasons behind
Yamaha's development of their machines, I don't think that is any excuse for
developing substandard products. As a consumer, I am not willing to forgive
them for a delivery of substandard products.
I have to say that I am very happy with my RM1X. A comment was made
earlier about Song Mode being shite. I think that comment is shite (no
disrespect to your opinion, honestly). I use Song Mode entirely - I find
pattern mode to be very limiting in the kind of music that I make. That
there is the differentiation that needs to be made. For the music that I
create, Song Mode is great. There is *NO WAY* I would be able to do the
music I want to do in pattern mode. 16 sections doesn't come close to the
variation that I am looking for. But I also don't do dance stuff much -
although I have messed around with pattern mode and I do find it very
interesting, fun, and has the opportunity to provide the vehicle for a large
amount of creativity.
For all the RM's faults (which there are many), there are still alot of
things that it does outstandingly well. In a mix, it fits in great! It is
my sequencer, first and foremost, but I use it's sounds in every song I make
and they are the sounds that I am looking for.
I think it is a great product with shortcomings. But, my Korg keyboard has
some shortcomings too (like a crappy user interface) but I don't regret
buying it for a second.
  Good discussion here folks

Go make music!
