Hello Jim,
I've completed a CD project using a process very similar to the one you
describe below.
Check it out at www.mp3.com/refraction
Here are some details. Put your external sequencer(i.e. Cakewalk or your
mc-50 mk II ) into record. Turn the STYLE selection knob to the style you
want (obviously you should be just a number above or below) and you will
notice the MIDI out indicator flash as the RM1x blasts out the SYSEX for
that style.
Make sure your sequencer is set to master or slave as the RM1x should be
synced using MIDI clock (I never have been able to make MTC work so far) Now
go into record again (or overdub) leaving a bar of space after the SYSEX and
start your RM1x jam in PATTERN mode muting and unmuting, switching sections
and twirling knobs to your heart's delight and let your sequencer slurp it
up. When you are done you can convert it to a MIDI file put it on a floppy
and play it back on the RM1x in SONG mode. Sometimes the SYSEX doesn't work
completely the first time, in which case you can go to your style, select it
in PATTERN-CHAIN mode - copy one bar (it's just the SYSEX you want),
convert-to-song JOB and presto - you'll have the correct voice/fx selections
for your song. Now you can also just use the RM1x as atone module in song
mode and keep your sequenced *performance* in Cakewalk, thereby having the
benefits of the best of both worlds : the *performance* of the RM1x and the
*editing ease* of a dedicated sequencer.
The whole process is a little fussy, but *definitely* worth it. To me, it's
what the RM1x is all about.
Cheers,
Michael Weiser

>HI all, I've got a ? i've been curious about for a while. I want to record
>myself playing the Rm1x into my old mc-50 mk II seq. I think there's 2
>scenarios. A: Record the midi output of up to 16 rm1x tracks into 1 track
>of the mc-50, which can hold up to 16 channels inside one track (somehow).
>In this case, all the pattern switching and muting could be done and played
>back over to the rm1x in song mode. But if it's in the mc-50 as 1
>multi-channeled track, how would it appear to the rm1x, and how would you
>split these parts back to their original channels on the 1x?
>
>Which leads me to scene 2: recording my section triggering to the mc-50 as
>single key presses (midi note #), only requiring 1 track. I'd then record
>this back into the rm1x and voila (?), there would be the sections
>triggering per the button presses, like pattern chain mode without the
>preplanning etc. Or is the mc-50 inadequate for recording multi-channel
>midi performances to play back into the blue box, and I should look for
>something else ... Any suggestions/info. are very appreciated at this
>juncture.
