RM1x soundfonts? anyone know anything about this?

Can anyone enlighten me on the SoundFont technology?   ive just bought the SB live card and im interested in learning alittle about soundfonts.   for instance, the RM1x is basically full of sampled sounds.  With soundfonts it appears that you create your own banks full of sampled sounds that can be played back as instruments.  so, would it be possible to sample every sound from the rm1x's banks and create soundfont banks of those?   and then, if this is possible, whats stopping people from doing the same from other instruments such as the cs2x etc....   it sounds good in theory, being able to use your rm1x to control these banks thus giving your rm1x more power.....well in a way.   please, someone......enlighten me!   thanks.   m/k
