Saylorville seemed to be about 90% frozen over today. There is still a
merganser/goldeneye/Mallard flock in an open section up lake from Lakeview, but
it is not easily visible from anywhere with Lakeview being closed. There were
two loons trapped in holes as seen from the dam and Cherry Glen. One appears
to be a Common and the other a Red-throated. The Common can probably make it
to the biggest expanse of open water, but the Red-throated is probably in
trouble. Driving backroads produced Lapland Longspurs, Northern Shrike,
Rough-legged Hawk, Harlan's Hawk, and numerous harriers, but no Snowy Owls or
partridge.
