Where does that say Curses and ASCII?

Last time I tried building either an X11 application or a Curses
application in ASCII mode, it failed.  An IBM employee told me
(in PMR or on MVS-OE LISTSERV, I forget which) that each was
unsupported in ASCII.  I'd love to learn that this has changed,
but not optimistc enough to spend much effort retrying.
