We are z/OS V1R4. We are trying to justify the purchase of FLASHCOPY.
What are the benefits of FLASHCOPY? How much time has FLASHCOPY saved ?
Depends what you currently do and what you are trying to do.
If you frequently copy datasets (disk-to-disk), such as creating test
databases from prod databases, Flash can cut down the time to do so from
minutes or hours to seconds. If the elapsed time to do that type of
copy is important to you, it is a signficant savings.
Flash can also be used to create point-in-time copies of volumes for
backup purposes. If today you have to quiesce your appliations for
hours while you run backups, Flash can create point-in-time mirrors of
your data in just minutes, then the mirrors can be leisurely backed up
while the updates to the live volumes continue. Many sites have used
Flash and similr functions from other vendors to reduce their backup
window significantly. If that is important to you, it is significant.
