As Dan basically stated, bit.listserv.ibm-main is a copy of the ibm-main listsrv traffic. Most of the people do not monitor the news server, but get the information via the listserv. I am responding via the listserv, and so some others may see this. Others that are far more knowledgable than I.

Hello -

My name is Andy, and I am very interested on the
Mainframes. I wish to know from an expert like you if
the IMS database application can run under SUSE LINUX?
In other words, can it only be ran under Z/OS? or,
could it be also ran under SUSE LINUX?

IMS does NOT run on any Linux. It does run on z/OS, I am not sure if it can run on z/VM or z/VSE. Others on the list will know this and answer.

Also, from your years of experience in the Mainframe
enviroment, what would you suggest or recommend using
as a stable and secure Mainframe operating system?
LINUX or UNIX?

My personal opinion is z/OS. However that is the only mainframe OS have I worked with. There are others like z/VM, z/VSE, z/TFP (all IBM) and Unisys' MCP. There could be others, but I am not sure if I would consider Unix a mainframe OS. Today's mainstream Unix's (at least the OS's that most consider Unix) don't run on mainframes, but on what most consider large mid-range comptuers. z/OS is "branded" Unix, but I am not sure if I would call it "Unix."

In addition to my first question, just out of
curiousity, on what Mainframe application does our
personal information such as our Drivers License #,
Social Security Number, Banking accounts, Credit Card
billing our DMV Records, and such are stored on? And
these informations stored on a Mainframe running Z/OS
or Linux?

Varies from bank to bank, DMV office to DMV office, and anyplace else that may store this information. Some use z/OS, some z/VM, some "Unix", some even use Windows. I am not sure if anyplace is using Linux, just yet. Today your Credit card information is kept by almost any place you buy something with your credit card, even if only for a little while. You make a purchase at a gas station, clothing store, music store, online to reserve airline tickets, etc. These companies may use Windows, "Unix", Linux, or whatever.

Thanks, and I hope you will reply to my interest in
the mainframes.

Andy
