Thanks for the replies..I appreciate it..I know that SUSE Linux runs
only on the Z/VM, but can it also run on the Transactional Processing
servers?
In other words, can I run SUSE Linux on a Mainframe server that does
all the banking accounts, Credit Card transactions, billing, and
payrolls?
And one more question regarding security...Is SUSE Linux a very secure
OS to be running on a Transactional Mainframe servers or UNIX would be
more secure?
Thanks
No Linux does not require z/VM on the mainframe. It can run on "bare
metal" or in a LPAR.
LPAR technology on zSeries mainframes have been given a security rating
that basically says that running LPARs on the mainframe is just as
secure as running on two different physical boxes. So running z/OS in
one LPAR and Linux in another (either nativly or under z/VM) is just as
secure as running z/OS on a mainframe and Linux on any other box within
your network.
It is my understanding that Linux uses the same security model as Unix.
So as OS is they logically provide the save level of security. However:
Most of the Unix OS code base is older and more mature so it may
have fewr bugs.
They share the same source code for some programs, so they may
have some of the same bugs.
Are you looking at hosting some type of application that is Linux based
on a MF?
