The dictonary explains it as 1) your enclosure for cattle and 2) a village for african tribes, probably enclosed too for protection. Afrikaans split off from Dutch quite some time ago and the both developped into their own directions. That is why we understand Afrikaans, but it often sounds ancient or funny to us. But I suppose you will think the same of Dutch;-).
