Well even the stripped-down backup program integrated into Windows XP understands the need for this. It offers four basic types of backups: Normal - backs up selected files and marks each file as backed up. Copy - backs ups elected files but does not mark any as backed up. Differential - backs up selected files only if they were created or modified since the previous backup, but does not mark them as backed up. Incremental - backs up selected files only if they were created or modified since the previous backup, and marks each file as backed up. There are all sorts of backup strategies that require this option; it seems bizarre for IBM development to respond with "why would you want to do that then?"
