So when you say no doc, and no debugging/diagnostic tools, maybe you
should do some homework before getting on a soapbox.

Wayne,

I do find it interesting that the "docs" as you call them do not seem to be on the CDROM set that IBM officially sanctions. Instead the docs (as you call them) do not seem to following IBM messages format indicating (to me) that they have not gone through the IBM process of documentation standards. Also, why we are at it while it appears they do have a limited M&C (better than lets say the current (12/1/07) ) COBOL compiler) they still do not conform to other IBM M&C's. I briefly glanced through the first manual and found I do not have enough basic knowledge of the product itself to say whether the manual is sufficient or not. The problem I can fore see is that management will think that the JAVA "programming Language" (bad term I know) is interchangeable with the PC world. I suspect strongly it is not (close maybe). But I suspect that terms in the MF world will utterly baffle the pc people (and vice versa to be fair). Just from briefly looking through the manuals I can see rather broad misunderstandings arising. It would be helpful if there was an ABC's of JAVA (not for sysprogs) so that misunderstandings would not happen or at least be minimal. Also, from just the small list of manuals you found is a minimalist start of manuals that already seem to be out of date. If I read Timothy's entry on JAVA correctly IBM is at 1.6 level and these manuals seem to be at 1.4 level. Maybe there is a whole batch of manuals in the offering, there seems to be no one place to find them like all the other IBM manuals ok granted I am talking the reg GC manuals not the redbooks (if you insist on counting them then there are two places).

As to the other manuals I find it troubling that they do not seem to fit the tried and true IBM format, I will let that pass (for the most part) and see if the rest of the people agree or disagree.

A misc note that I do find intriguing is that for the first time (in my memory) there is a disclaimer in one of the manuals:
===================================
The following paragraph does not apply to the United Kingdom or any other
country where such provisions are inconsistent with local law:
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION PROVIDES THIS
PUBLICATION “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED
WARRANTIES OF NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS
FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Some states do not allow disclaimer of express or implied warranties in certain transactions, therefore, this statement may not apply
to you.
This information could include technical inaccuracies or typographical errors. Changes are periodically made to the information herein; these changes will be incorporated in new editions of the publication. IBM may make improvements
and/or changes in the product(s) and/or the program(s) described in this
publication at any time without notice.

================================================
I hope I can reproduce the above without any infringements.
But the "as is" warning says quite a bit, IMO.

I sure wouldn't want any product that has an "AS IS" warranty running on my machine.
