fragility of the hardware. Resorting to different IODFs seems laborious and

Right you are Skip. Last year I had to move four (4) 3174 control units. We lost 2 power supplies and a diskette drive just from the power off-power on cycle. Don't do it unless you're forced to, and if you do, make sure your IBM FE has 3174 power supplies and diskette drives on hand.
