Ed (et al):

SMF is one of the sources for the RES Suite solution for obtaining information
only IF the source module available, but the info from SMF is typically
insufficient or incomplete. As an example, assume the following:

PGMA - using File1, File2, File3 - calling PGMB
PGMB- using File4 - calling PGMC
PGMC - using File5

SMF tells you simply that PGMA uses File1, File2, File3, File4, File5

As can be seen, this is not completely accurate. What do you do if you need to
change the format of file5? Which program is affected? It is not easy to
determine, and, using only SMF records, the user would not have access to
completely accurate and up to date information about the file in question.

And concerning DB2, Ed you mention that you are not aware of any vendor tools
which are able to provide information about DB2 usage and access. One of the
tools within the RES Suite, DOCET/MP, can analyze source code in detal
concerning not only DB2, but also provides all the detailed info about the
usage of any kind of resource by any specific program.

If anyone wants more information, please let me know.

This is what SMF can be used for easy and straightforward.

 There is SEA Software's JCLPLUS
There is ASG Software's ProJCL or INFO/X

 And there are probably others.

If you have CA-ESP, there might be some resport process you can use
 for executed jobs.

If you have a source change management system (Changeman or
Endevor) you can probably do something with that as well.
