I disagree with the analogy. I've been on IBM-MAIN,RACF-L etc since '98 and
posted seldom, but posted, thereby absolving me of the lurker Scarlet
Letter. I've read the Chicago Tribune since the Eisenhower administration
and never been tempted to send a letter to the editor. I suppose my
continued subscription renewal (until they went Internet) could be construed
as "feedback" to the Trib.

Well, this *is* called the IBM Mainframe Discussion List. Joining a
discussion group and then choosing never to discuss anything is not quite
the same as reading a newspaper and choosing not to provide feedback.
I suppose "lurker" has a somewhat negative connotation - is there a better
word? "Viewer?" "Observer?"

Are people who read daily newspapers but never write a letter to the editor
also lurkers? When I access data with a RACF rule that allows me read-only
access (such as SYS1.MACLIB ), am I a data lurker?
Not implying, just questioning.
