Shorn of explicit context the term 'lurker' does have negative
connotations, but LISTSERV lurking itself is innocuous, much more
innocuous than posting.

Such research as has been done on LISTSERV lurkers suggests that the
more recondite the notional subject of a list is the more lurkers it
has (as a percentage of that list's subscriber count). A LISTSERV
devoted to Old-Kingdom Egyptology---There is one---is likely to have
more lurkers and fewer active posters than one for Florida Tea-Party
members.

The term is not of course IBM-MAIN specific. It dates back to the
bulletin boards, and it is now so well established and widely used
that attempts to replace it or kill it off are not very likely to
succeed. Moreover, the obvious candidates to replace
'lurker'---'watcher', eavesdropper', and the like---are themselves
pejorative in one way or another.
