I think every shop I ever worked in had a copy of DEALLOC named "X" so operators could just use "S X". In Allan's case, it was probably also true. I don't know if starting a non existent PROC (which would generate a JCL error) would do anything. Can't go back and test it now - but someone should be able to. There are lots of pre z/OS 1.7 systems floating around out there still, including ones running on Herc.
