annual hackers conference (origins predate use of "hacker" to refer to
crooks and attackers; initially I was the only ibm employee that was
invited) has had several sessions with lock pick and safe combination
instruction/practice.

there use to be reference that there were really only 200 people in
silicon valley (most of them hacker attendees), there just seemed like
more because they kept moving around a lot. 

before things got so commercial, competitors could bring unannounced
products to the conference and play with each others toys.
