I have been tasked with determining whether the Stand-Alone Dump (SAD) and
Stand-Alone Restore (SAR)
processes are still available and in use.

Through research and testing, I was able to successfully execute the SAD
process. Although I have not
used it in several years, it remains a viable option if needed. Notably, SAD
utilized a DASD volume for
the dump-tape was neither used nor tested in this instance.

Regarding SAR, I have not worked with this process since the late 1980s. While
we currently utilize FDR,
which includes an SAR function, I am uncertain whether it is compatible with
Virtual Tape System (VTS)
devices. Given that we do not have any stand-alone tape devices, I would like
to know if anyone has
recently employed this process or has insights into its current applicability.

The only scenario in which I can envision a need for this process is in the
event of a total loss of both
primary and disaster recovery locations, where only full-volume backups remain.
However, I would
appreciate any insights on alternative approaches that may be available in such
a situation.

I welcome any input or experiences that may help clarify these matters.

I used SAD just for curiosity, I have never met any person who really needed it. YMMV.

Regarding SAR I used it few months ago and IMHO its use is really limited nowadays. My case was to restore tapes in completely vanilla data center - just new (not configured) equipment and bunch of tapes in a case. SAR is only small part of that process. However, yes - it is possible to IPL standalone tool from virtual tape inside VTS and then use the tool to restore DASD volumes. Of course it is not convenient, so actually the goal is to restore some tech z/OS image and then IPL it from DASD. Then work on z/OS.

For regular DR processing I assume remote copy (PPRC, etc.), secondary datacenter configured for that purpose, no restore from tapes, just IPL z/OS according to the procedure.
