Instead of ABENDing a piece of work (pun intended) that is spewing an infinite output or using an infinite amount of some resource, how about putting it into some kind of suspended status for later resolution by the submitter, the developer, an operator manager, etc.? The downside is that sooner or later many address spaces could be tied up with suspended pieces of work that exceeded all known limits and have yet to be decided upon as to how to handle, since the developer is on vacation or the dog ate the source code . But that is preferable to letting them spew away forever or be ABENDed when only one microsecond away from a normal end. Maybe some committee could vote on what to do with the suspended spewer(s).
Just an idea. Mommy, make it go away. An out of control job would kill unrelated work. Per file quotas might be workable, but would lead to the same types of outcry as space specification: "I don't know how much output the job will create." -- Shmuel (Seymour J.)
