'm excited to announce the North America 2013 Master the Mainframe
contest begins October 7th. We are in the opening days of enrollment
and we already have some 200 schools registered. Last year, we had
4,682 students in the US/Canada contest, our eighth consecutive year
of growth. I'll bet you didn't know that since its inception in
2005, the contest has run in 33 countries, with more than 59,000 high
school and college students participating. What a great way to bring
the next generation of IT professionals into the world of enterprise
computing!
Designed to attract new students to the platform, the contest is
built for “no experience necessary.” Contestants begin by learning
how to log on to a mainframe, following screen shots that walk them
through what might be an unfamiliar new world (75 percent of last
year’s contestants reported that the contest was their first hands-on
experience with a mainframe). While gaining real-world skills,
students will be introduced to the vital role that the mainframe
plays in mobile, cloud, and analytics, and they'll learn about our
recent integration with the OpenStack cloud computing framework.
Students who progress through the first two parts of the contest will
also gain hands-on experience with four operating systems: z/OS,
Linux on System z (first time ever!), z/TPF and z/VM. Those who go
on to Part 3 will have the opportunity to access Rational Developer
for System z in the cloud.
