The problem is convincing the powers-that-be of that. I have the scars from 
attempting it. Here inertia hits - 'we have always used a "real console" for 
NIP, we want to keep it', and no amount of arguments helped me. And I wasn't 
even the one who couldn't see the actual error message since I wasn't around 
that night. All those refusing to rethink their definitions later were the ones 
that flailed around for hours (yes, literally hours) until hitting a solution 
*without* knowing what the real problem was.

And even on a fast-rolling NIP console - an LPALST syntax error would have been 
readable before the wait state. Ask me how I know.
