z/VM as a matter of SOP provides a DVD OS image that can be IPLed
directly from an HMC. z/OS does not. You have to obtain a volume-dump copy
of a runnable system, then perform 'stand-alone' restores onto DASD
volumes that you can access. However, even that process is difficult until
you can implement an I/O configuration that allows you to access any of
your peripherals.
As others have suggested, do not try this at home alone.
This sounds like an eventuality that IBM didn't anticipate.
What if customer is tapeless? Loaner tape drive? Pre-built system
shipped on new DASD?
As someone else posted, the COD is available on DVD; it has been
available that way for some years now.
We did this because (a) a number of customers are "going tapeless" and
(b) our current technology drives and those of another popular mainframe
tape vendor do not share a common recording format as they did in the
past, so tapes recorded on our drives are no longer readable on theirs
(and, of course, vice versa). So the question is no longer, "Do you
have tape drives," but rather, "Do you have *compatible* tape drives"?
In fact, more customers are now ordering the COD on DVD than on tape,
which I found a bit surprising when I heard that earlier this month.
