Mounting cartridges to install a driver system with the stand-alone ICKDSF and ADRDSSU and using that to install ServerPac has always been infinitely easier. Ditto for receiving maintenance.
Since z/OS V1.13, we support the use of the NOVERIFY keyword on DFSMSdss standalone RESTORE. Thus, the "traditional" prior DSF INIT is not absolutely necessary any more. Also, standalone restore knows how to use the HMC's file system to restore the Customized Offerings Driver (COD) volumes from DVD.
