Just a thought, you say it is a virtual tape that was expired .
What hardware?
IBM VTS "might" have zeroed the tape if the settings tell it too..
Ouch

.

It depends on what the real problem with the tape is.

Is it a physical tape or a virtual one?
VIRTUAL

Has it been overwritten? The ARC309I message you previously reported does not
answer that question. It only tells you that HSM thinks it still owns the
tape. But the AUDIT command already told you that.

NOT OVERWRITTEN

What does the LIST TTOC command tell you? If there is only one file on the
tape, then all is probably lost. If more than one, can you restore any of the
ones that are not damaged?

MULTIPLE FILES ON THE TAPE, HAVEN'T TRIED OTHERS. EXPECT SAME RESULT BUT I CAN
TRY

Does the AUDIT VOLUMES(V05537) command provide any useful information?

JUST THE FIXCDS COMMANDS

Do you have any tool (we called ours TAPESNIF) that will print the HDR1 records
from the tape? If not, can you mount the tape as BLP and have IDCAMS print
files 1, 4, 7, etc?
TTOC APPEARS TO SHOW TAPE HAS FILES

Can you determine the intent of the FIXCDS commands AUDIT is recommending?
FROM IBM LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD SET THE FILE COUNT TO 0, MIGHT NOT BE GOOD

HSM has a Diagnosis manual and a Data Areas manual that should help.

Does this provide sufficient incentive to start duplexing to provide a recovery
path when, not if, this happens again?
NOPE, THESE TAPES EXPIRED PRE-MATURE, IF I DUPLEXED I WOULD JUST HAVE 2 TAPES
THAT WERE USELESS.
AND I CAN'T JUSTIFY DOUBLE THE VIRTUAL FOOTPRINT
