There can be a significant difference between the status of something as
reported in some database somewhere and the real world.

RMM is a product that runs on your mainframe. You already stated you
inadvertently scratched it in RMM and then manually assigned a "correct"
status. The RMM status merely reflects the results of these actions.

The tape itself is a virtual tape that is physically processed on some other
system. You have not shown us anything about what that other system did to the
actual media/data. RMM may have told this system to scratch the tape before
you changed its status back.

The description for DATA CHECK says the control unit or I/O device detected
invalid data. There should be some log data on your virtual tape system to
confirm this. While virtual tapes can suffer data corruption, it is more
likely that it was overwritten and the virtual system is telling HSM there is
no data.

This is an ML2 tape. Why would there be backups on it?

You need to provide details. Do you mean you have two backup copies, each on a
different tape? Or do you mean you have a backup copy that spans two tapes?
Are you saying that attempts to recover a backup copy of a dataset from a
different tape has the same problem?

What do backup tapes have to do with the status of the ML2 tape that started
this thread?
