If you are using z/OS, I think you will find all the
services you require are AM31/RM31-clean, no
need to dumb down to AM24/RM24.

I recommend you passively accept whatever
RMODE you are loaded as (ie just check
whatever you are using as a base register),
and use that to determine which AMODE to
step down to.
