I concur, it was a pain. I'm glad it was done.

If you’re installing your starter system second level, there’s no need
to allocate a whole, real volume to it for page and spool. It can be
just as happy with minidisks of your desired size and will see them with
the proper labels and be quite happy. So take one mod 27, and break it
into two minidisks, making it both your page and spool. Or smaller, if
you’d like. Then eventually, you can do the page and spool configuration
the way you’d like.
