Comment #39 on issue 526 by [email protected]: Dead keys (^`~ etc) don't work in XIM programs
http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/detail?id=526

Hi,

I'm a French terminal geek living in Japan, and not being able to use
xterm anymore was a real pain for me too.
You may want to try another terminal instead.
I got most satisfaction from
http://www.os-cillation.de/en/open-source-projekte/xfce-terminal/
which is small, and which I could set up to look like my previous
xterm (I may even suggest you choos a font like Computer Modern Bright
Light, which is good for both French (except wide chars like ellipsis
« … ») and Japanese).

However, for some reason, it seems I switched by to scim some time ago
(I don't remember), and I don't have time to check whether this term
and ibus is satisfactory enough for me.
So, Scim, LANG=fr_FR_UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8, and the terminal
above is a good enough solution for me.
I don't know if scim's good enough for Chinese (e.g., it's bad for
Korean on top of a non-qwerty layout, since not using qwerty will
scramble the already quite ergonomic Korean layout.)

Hope it helps,

P!
