Hi,

I wouldn't be too quick to remove the Transducer. You'd save some money using
the existing one.

It's been covered on list here several times, And some folks might agree that
it's unlikely that your transducer would be inoperative.
And as long as you don't want a dual frequency sounder which , at the Low
frequency can do Deep soundings,
the commonly installed transducer with an operating frequency of 200 KHz
(50Khz being the "Deep" sounder freq).. will continue to work just fine.

As long as you DON'T want a transducer that can interconnect with multi-display
units, A simple depth sounder and using the existing transducer, should allow
you to be able to keep the costs down.

Cable connections may be different. But knowing that the common cable is a
simple Shielded wire.. Almost any kind of a connector would work. A simple and
inexpensive connector can be the male an female connectors called "RCA" or "
Phono" connectors. Commonly seen on the back of Audio amplifiers, they are
effective Coaxial connectors for applications like a depth sounder.
The can be Gold Plated as well. A good thing to have in a Marine environment.

There is a rare possibility that you may purchase a High Power sounder and
overload the transducer, causing damage, but that would be rare indeed,
There may also be a slight ..Mis-match of transducer impedance. That "might"
show as a slight error in depth reading .
But many sounder units have an "Off Set" adjustment that could be use to
Calibrate to the proper depth.

Fitting the existing mounting hole is a bit more trouble.
I made a simple "Collar" of STARBOARD to fit the existing hole with a smaller
hole inside in which to fit the unit.
With care it can be made to look like it was made that way... :-)
Depending on the design shape of the Sounder Head, of course..

  Subject: [IC27A] Depth Sounder

I have a 1986 Catalina 27 that needs a new depth sounder. I think it is
original one, Horizon DS-1. I would like to replace with a low cost one and one
that will fit in 4"hole and 1 3/4 thru hull transducer. Any recommendations?
