I have the Navman Depth and Speed units...   They can be "set and forget" 
simple, but also have some sophisticated functions if you want to play with 
them...  What I like most is the large uncluttered display. 

They lend themselves to mounting in a collar as Ralph suggested, and at 4.4 
inches square, they will just cover the 4" dia. hole.

As far as sealers go, it is my understanding the 3M 5200 is a powerful 
adhesive, and can make removal of the bedded part difficult.  Polysulfides can 
attack some plastics, and some products are not intended for underwater use.  I 
use polysulfide for thru-hulls and transducers, and never had a problem with 
leaks or removal.
