You should definitely worry about it. I am on Chesapeake and see
deterioration of zinc each season. Stray current at slip or transient
marinas contributes as does differences in values on the galvanic scale.

In doing a little reading. My boat is in fresh water, in which case
zinc is not reccomended. Folks are talking about magnesium. Should I
even worry about it in the great lakes for a boat that spends 4
months in the water?

Ditto what Bruce says.
I've got 2 streamlined collar anodes on the prop shaft and a 3 or 4"
diameter "rudder" anode on the strut.
The rudder anode looks like two discs, one on each side of the
strut. The discs are attached with a bolt through the strut.)
Don't obstuct the water flow into the cutlass bearing when you
attach the shaft anodes. Be sure to leave a 1/4" or 1/2" between
the shaft anode and the cutlass bearing.
On average, they last about 8 months, depending on what boats move
into the area.... the diver checks them every 4 months and replaces
them as indicated.
I'd recommend the anodes that erode from the outside surface
inward. It's easier to tell when they're almost consumed. They
have a small percentage of cadmiumin added to the alloy.

Hello:
I have one on the shaft but I’m thinking about putting one on the st
rut also. It’s getting pock marked. I’m thinking the flat
kind that power boaters use . I could drill and tap a hole to attac
h it. The rubber inside the cutlass bearing electrically isolates t
he strut from the shaft so the shaft zinc can’t protect the strut.
The bronze thru-hulls would be protected by a bonding wire, although
I don’t have one and they are in great shape for an old boat (and N
igel Calder doesn’t recommend bonding the thru-hulls - he states the
y will actually deteriorate faster if attached to a bonding wire.

What is the usual compliment of zincs on a C27? I checked catalina
direct that they didn't have much in the way of parts. I want to be
sure I am not missing any when I splash the boat.
Thanks
Derek.
