I have a roller furler and a backstay adjuster. I can still change the entry of
the headsail by adjusting the backstay. The foil still has some flexibility, so
more tension makes it straighter and tightens the jib halyard and looser
tension does the opposite. So I keep bending my mast in an effort to squeeze
out more speed or control how much power I have in the jib

Subject: [IC27A] Backstay adjuster??

This past weekend, I finally completed the installation of my new Harken roller
furler. Since the shape of the headsail is now pretty much controlled by the
foil, is it necessary to have a backstay adjuster anymore? I would sure like
to be able to have easier access to the stern ladder.

Also, I can't see much benefit now to loosening the tension on a downwind run,
and I worry that it might cause problems if I forget to snug it back up before
trying to furl the sail.
