On my traditional Catalina 27 ('81) I have the split backstay and a center
block to tension the backstay. It does cause a blocked stern between the 3
lines running up from the transom.

Yes! You should still need it. In fact, you still need to adjust halyard
tension as well. Giving up tweaking the sails means the same thing with or
without a furler. It's just a little harder to read because of the foil.
It's like a full batten mainsail in that regard, it still needs shaping to
perform but it's harder to read.
You didn't mention what style of back stay adjuster you have. I think you'd
have to be over 10 feet tall to have an issue walking through the backstay
adjuster on Wing Tip.

The photo is at a bad angle to show off the 16:1 cascade backstay adjuster
but you can see the clear access. The upper 2 blocks are up out of the
photo and the one that is showing looks like it is going to the boom
somehow.

This past weekend, I finally completed the installation of my new Harken
roller furler. Since the shape of the headsail is now pretty much controlled
by the foil, is it necessary to have a backstay adjuster anymore? I would
sure like to be able to have easier access to the stern ladder.
Also, I can't see much benefit now to loosening the tension on a downwind
run, and I worry that it might cause problems if I forget to snug it back up
before trying to furl the sail.
