My boat came with a Honda 9.9 too large for the "hole" so the PO had a custom bracket made to mount the engine at exactly the same height above the water just about 14"-16" further aft. It works well and was very strong but puts the tilt controls our of reach, I have rigged 2 lines; one to lull to unlock so the engine can be lowered and one to unlock to raise the engine. There is also a block and tackle to raise the engine out of the water and to lower it. My image folder on the website has a picture if you are interested.,

It is a very heavy engine about 150lbs. I was wondering if it would be reccomended to have a stainless steel backing plate made or if I will be ok to use a thick piece of wood as the backing plate for the motor mount?
