In general if the wind is 12 knots or above AND they are forecasting higher
winds I reef before leaving the dock (the theory is it is always easier to
shake out a reef than put one in). If I am sailing I start considering a
reef when the wind gets to 16+, but that depends on sea conditions and
traffic and where I am headed. If I am sailing alone, I almost always put
in a reef at 12-15, again, it is easier to shake it out than put one in ...
I sail often shorthanded or single handed.

Subject: [IC27A] When to Reef the main

At work today but the wind is 10- 20 knts today and I was thinking that I
should set up the mainsail reefing for when I need it. There is only one
reef point in my main. I don't know how the previous owner attached the tack
as there is no reef hook on the goose neck. There is a block, line and cleat
on the boom for the clew end.
So for those that sail the C27 when do you feel the need to reef the main?
In what wind conditions, like 12, 15, 20 knots?
