Although Joe’s wife may be a good indicator for him, when you reef is dependant
on many things. Is your boat “light” or “heavy”, do you have “crew” willing to
hike. Do you have the “poker” night guys on board or just your petite wife? Do
you have a furling headsail and how big is it (the Cat 27 is an IOR design but
that’s another thread). Is it set properly? How big are the seas and a few
other factors

For me, it’s time to reef when I can’t “carry” any main at all for extended
periods of time or when my “crew” starts to “complain” loudly, which ever comes
first. Experience will let you “see” those situations coming further and
further ahead.

Point I’m trying to make is: it’s up to you and your boat and circumstance as
to when to shorten sail.

Personally, I use my wife's death curdling screams as my guide. I bet you won't
find that one in Chapman's either.

Boy, using rover's stomach as a weather guide on when to reef sounds fool
proof. I wonder why I have never seen that in Chapman's??? That's a good one.
