The old saying goes, if you think about reefing, you should have reefed 
already.  My boat does not have a hook on the gooseneck.  It has a cleat on 
both sides of the mast that uses a short piece of line to secure the tack of 
the sail.  I attached a reefing line to one cleat, then run the line thru the 
cringle at the tack.  Then down to a block at the mast base and back to the 
cockpit.
You should reef when you heel too much and you have to fight the helm.  I find 
that I am often faster when reefed and a lot more comfortable.

At work today but the wind is 10- 20 knts today and I was thinking that I 
should set up the mainsail reefing for when I need it. There is only one reef 
point in my main. I don't know how the previous owner attached the tack as 
there is no reef hook on the goose neck. There is a block, line and cleat on 
the boom for the clew end.
So for those that sail the C27 when do you feel the need to reef the main? In 
what wind conditions, like 12, 15, 20 knots?
