One of my favorite sayings is that "the best time to reef is when you
first think of it". I generally follow it. As was pointed out the boat
sails much better and faster if kept reasonably upright. The exception
is if racing I shortly will be running, I just blow the main with the
traveler.

You didn't say what year, but on my 86 with a fixed height gooseneck the
oem front reefing intent seemed to be a line from the cleat on the mast,
through the grommet at the reef point, and back down to the cleat on the
other side. Least I figured that is why they had the cleats on the mast.
(boat came to me unrigged). A better main came with two rings on either
side at the grommet tightly attached by a very short strap, you run the
line through the ring and down to the same side, this is better because
there is less friction. And it lets you handle two reef points, one on
each side. I leave a right length line in place on each side, attached
through the small hole in the middle of the cleat with a knot, to the
sail ring and back and cleated in a loose position. To reef I just
tighten it up.
