David,

Shipping the mast is going to be tricky so here's an option I use.

Because we trailer, and sometimes it's easier to drop the mast in the slip
and secure the night before hauling out, I wind up motoring with the mast
down. Catalina set-up the bow pulpit, the traveler beam, and the stern
railing all at the same height to give the mast a 3 point support for
transit. Good for a trucker but impossible for a skipper.

Instead I use:

1. A securing fixture on top of the pulpit

a. No Photo but looks like a boomerang with two 1" SS hand holds along
the sides used for tying off.

b. It remains in place full time and makes a nice seat or "kids" dive
platform w/ 3m non skid on top.

2. An A frame at the normal mast position that gives mast support and
organizes the shrouds.

3. A high rear support that can easily be walked under at the wheel.

b. Photo of earlier rear support

It may not work for a live aboard with only a couple of weeks of usage
planned but it indeed may still be less expensive than shipping. If you
could only find a buyer for it before you built it maybe that would fix the
"What do I do with afterward dilemma" you'd face.

Cheers,

Subject: [IC27A] Mast weight

I have a 1971 Catalina 27 (hull #65). I am cruising from New Rochelle, New
York to The North Channel of Georgian Bay for the summer, returning in
October to New Rochelle.

I was going to strike the mast and lay it on deck, but am thinking of
shipping it from New Rochelle to Buffalo, New York to elevate deck clutter.
Does anyone know approximately how much the mast weights. I have its
length, but weight is a mystery.
