I am not a big fan, but my brother who sails with me often is. And when more 
than 4 are in the cockpit it is just too crowded. Plus it makes an easy prep 
table when using a rail mounted grill.  My brother has always wanted them so I 
did it more for him than me.  

My boat has an adjustable back-stay so that makes them a bit cramped. Between a 
swim ladder, a lifesling, horseshoe pfd, and  an outboard bracket (square pad 
on rail for dingy ob) and now the seats are getting a bit crowded.

Only time will tell if these were a good idea.
