Hi Joe,

I too have had bird trouble. Cormorants mostly, They like to roost for the
night on the spreaders and masthead. To keep them off the spreaders, I stretch
3 lengths of cord from one shroud to the other across the front of the mast,
about 2,4, and 6 inches above the spreaders. These discourage landings... The
most effective masthead solution has been an owl from West Marine. I cut a
round wood disk to fit in the bottom, and drilled a hole for a 5/8" dowel. I
put screw eyes in the dowel at the bottom and part way up, so that the owl's
base was nearly even with the top of the masthead, when hauled up with my spare
jib halyard, A downhaul connects to the lower eye.

Since Sundance lives on a mooring, she usually points into the wind, and
Cormorants land into the wind, so I faced my owl aft. I have watched these
dirty birds on final approach as they come face to face with a plastic owl.
They chicken out and find a different boat....
