Biggest thing so far (affecting sailing) is the “Mexico race”, Regatta al Sol
from Pensacola, Fla to Isla Mujeres, Mx. There was an “owner/skipper”
conference call a couple days ago and they decided to go, with an “offset” mark
to the east to miss the spill. Some of the boats on Lake Pontchatrain (New
Orleans) were worried about getting out of the lake for the race but now are
worried about getting back in for hurricane season. There are “spill booms”
every where.

Where the spill is there’s no sailing to speak of but “they” have closed
“fishing” so expect the price of your seafood platter at ”Red Lobster” to go
way up!

The spill is , so far, predicted to make “land fall” in Alabama first but will
surly affect every body from La to Fla. God help us all if it makes the
“corner” at the Fla Keys and heads up the east coast in the Stream….you just
might see it where you are.

Next day or so they are putting a 70 ton “dome” over the well head and hoping
to “pipe” the oil to the surface. Only problem is, it’s not been done it in 5k
feet of water before.

“They” still don’t know how much oil is being released from the well. 200,000
gallons a day is, so far, the “best guess”

All the clubs on the gulf coast are marshaling volunteers to help in any way
possible…I’ll be there.

Mark, Gratis (6115), with all the news about oil in the Gulf, what is happening
with sailing? I was able to see first hand the oil spill in Texas in 1980 (oil
rig in Yucatan). It was a real mess with big globs oil a foot thick and yards
long washed up on the beach between Corpis Cristi and Brownsville. I can’t
imagine how that would mess up a nice white hull let alone getting all over
sails and into engines etc.
