I have a 1976 Catalina 27 with a small 2 stroke Mercury outboard mounted in the cutout of the transom. I want to upgrade, but am finding that to get an engine that will fit and tilt up properly is very difficult because modern engines have bigger housings than the cutout will allow. Additionally, it has to have a very short shaft because otherwise the prop will hit the rudder, which angles back under where the engine hangs.
Has anybody else run into this that could part with some advice? I would love to learn a of a new outboard make/model that will fit. Or, should I move to a mounted bracket? Thanks for you help!
