Neil, Did you ever figure out if there is a newer 4 stroke outboard that will
fit in your transom space?  I have the same problem.  I have a 75 Catalina 27
that came with an older Honda 10 four stroke engine.  Now the water pump is
shot
and I don't really want to put a lot of mone into this old engine.  I know that
it is a long shaft, it tilts up and it doesn't interfer with the rudder.  I
tried my Mercury 9.9 4 stroke and idoesnt tilt up unless I take the cowling
off.  I know this topic has come up on the list in the past, but I can't seem
to
find an answer.

Subject: [IC27A] Outboard Engine advice needed

I have a 1976 Catalina 27 with a small 2 stroke Mercury outboard mounted in the
cutout of the transom. I want to upgrade, but am finding that to get an engine
that will fit and tilt up properly is very difficult because modern engines
have
bigger housings than the cutout will allow. Additionally, it has to have a very
short shaft because otherwise the prop will hit the rudder, which angles back
under where the engine hangs.

Has anybody else run into this that could part with some advice?

I would love to learn a of a new outboard make/model that will fit. Or, should
I
move to a mounted bracket?

Thanks for you help!
