Pinto is the color designation not a breed. Paint is a breed. To be
eligible for registry, a Paint's sire and dam must be registered with the
American Paint Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, or
the Jockey Club (Thoroughbreds). At least one parent must be a registered
American Paint Horse.

To be eligible for the Regular Registry, the horse must also exhibit a
minimum amount of white. Tobiano refers to a Paint or pinto that usually
has 4 white legs and uniform blotches. The head is usually a solid color
but can have a blaze, etc.

The Frame Overo usually has less uniform markings, splashy or splotchy
looking, most of the legs are dark, white does not extend over the back.

There's also a Tovero which is mostly white with color in very specific
areas of the head and body.

They also come in Sabino which is a freckled, roany look.
To make things more complicated a horse can be combinations of these colors!

Icleandics can be Tobiano or a form of Overo called Splash.
